soft slipper soles

Cold toes // From now until end of day Thanksgiving Oct 12, slipper soles are on sale in shop (link in bio). My toes are COLD so yours might be too so let’s get to work warming them up, shall we? This luscious black leather was a chance add to our lineup and it is now one of our most popular. Our supplier always steers me to the softest yet durable for our feetsies. . . . #Etsy #Slippers #SlipperSoles #slipperseason #SlipperBottoms #Sale #yyc #soles #MadeInAlberta

a little break

Pause // we “should” be prepping for our show on October 23 at @fibreshindig but instead we took the weekend to escape to camp – disconnect, reconnect, and soak up the glorious autumn. Sometimes, we have to remember that the days are long, but the years are so very short. . . . [Image description: There is a dirt pathway through a forest of yellow leaved birch and aspen trees, and some conifers dabbled about. carving on the deck

Garden // I planted some hardy hens and chicks into garden today, and the patterns carved on today’s yarn bowls reflect these new additions. MORE FLOWERS. I carved until my toes were too cold for the patio, then wrapped up the session with some hastily carved leaves, relocated to the drying rack in studio, and hustled myself to the warmth of the house. Fibre Shindig is coming soon October 23 @fibreshindig so mark your calendars! . . . #wheelthrown #handcarved #ceramics #pottery #AlbertaMade #makerlife #potteryprocess

Workin’ // It’s gonna be 34C (93F) again today and I’m heading out to lay in cold water after this pot is complete. wild hair

I make heads so they can grow hair // I was in grade four or five when my teacher handed out raw chicken eggs, and we drew faces upon them. We then blew them out so they were hollow, and carefully peeled off the top bit of shell. We crafted the fanciest of toilet paper roll pedestals for our eggs, then propped them atop and added soil and grass seed. Adding a bit of water, they were set upon the classroom ledge and we were asked to dig into our wee selves and find patience. Within days, we had the start of grass shoots and within weeks, were able to trim and style our little egghead’s grass hairdo. 🥚 I can only assume this is remnant sweet memory and bliss from that project. You never know what will stay in a young artist’s heart, only to arise again over three decades later. 🥚 . . [image description: Two white plant pots with faces. Hot Sunday // And when it is hot, we make empty heads in the shade on the deck. It’s 32 C here in Calgary, and I may now just pour myself a cocktail, and go lay in the shade with the hose misting me. Because WOW. ️ . . . #pinchpots #sculpture #facesculpture #facesculpting #CanadianCeramics #AlbertaPotters #plainsmanpottery #handbuilding #ceramics #pottery #studiolife

trio of heads

Heading into bisque // I keep meaning to run a bisque kiln but then I make more heads that need to dry first, which extends the wait. I’m learning patience. And how to make duck lip poses in sculpture. Both give me mixed emotions. 🦆 [Image description: three different sizes of white clay pinch pot with humanoid faces sculpted onto the front.] . . #ceramicartist #handemadeceramics #ceramicpots #ceramicplanter #ceramicstudio #ceramicsculpture #claylife #pottery #potteryart #handmadepottery #handbuiltpottery #sculpture #functionalpottery #potterymaker #potterymakers #potterymaking #potteryprocess #pottersofinstagram #potterslife #AlbertaPotters #canadianceramicsstudio

drawing exercises

Book Learnin’ // Got a book. Doing stuff from the Book. “Making Comics” from Lynda Barry is really fun. (she is @NearSitedMonkey on instagram). Five stars, would recommend for back patio drawing thus far in that I actually sat down and drew something fun and didn’t get all angsty and serious about the darned thing. This is me as an astronaut. I strayed a bit because I lost focus when someone was yelling for me. Note: Rarely does one yell for me when I am not doing art. When I am lonely, I should hold a pen or paintbrush, then wait… Anywho, focus is wibbly wobbly at the best of times. This is fun. Do you have any drawing practices that you go back to to free yourself? . . [image description: Open book detailing a drawing exercise and on top, 4″ x 6″ index cards with the top card with a black ink drawn line frame, titled “me” with the date July 11, and a black inked cartoon figure of a woman with short curly hair in a headband with an astronaut helmet and suit against a starry sky. ] . . #drawing #practice #artpractice #comics #artist #penandinkdrawing

from a simple pinchpot

Faces // The back patio and I have been making faces when the days are too hot to do much else. I’m keen on larger-than-life eyes, drawing them larger and wider on each pot. Huge eyelids upper and lower, nose and lips coming into reality as I work. The birds sing, and I sculpt until the kiln is eventually full (not yet) and the heatwaves that keep rolling over the city start to calm. These pots are not what I was planning but sometimes the heat takes us where it takes us. . [image descriptions for 4 images: Image 1: grey clay with middle hollowed in the start of a pinch pot. Faces // I worked on more small pinch pot faces during our brief hot weather spike this past weekend. Now as the weather chills as May long approaches, I’m cleaning up these cheeks and pondering the sizes of the pots. This larger one is significantly larger than the two in the last set, which I like for larger plants. I adore the unruly hair that plants add to give these pots their real finishing touches.#canadianceramics #sculpture #pinchpots #pottery Posted by Intagrate Lite

Going Batty

Testing // Jason made a new bat system for me because our beloved supplier Ceramics Canada is out of stock. We had a box of bisque tiles laying about, so we're making due with those as the bats. So far, it's working great although it will take more practice for me to pull the clay up from the tile that is so close to the bat that holds it. And to remember to keep the bisque wet enough so my mug doesn't SURPRISE! pop off while I'm throwing. I'll call the first run using these small bats a success and I'm looking forward to trying more this weekend. …#batsystem #throwingbats #bisquetiles #canadianceramicsstudio #albertapotters #testing #neverstoplearning.[image description: A line of five freshly throwing pottery mugs made of white clay, each on a square bisque tile.] Posted by Intagrate Lite

studio assistant

Studio assistant // This blurred image is Lily. Lily is some strange mix of terrier and dachshund. Or cat. And something very very fast. She’s very very #helpfail when we are working on projects because she really likes to be near us, which does not help since her input is rarely useful. She is mostly in it for the snacks, if you must know. She spent our house painting project woefully penned in a bedroom after being unable to resist dipping her rear into paint. Repeatedly. Anywho, this is now our one and only four legged studio assistant. She was still enough for me to capture just one photo of her in the studio where she isn’t just a blur. She is mostly just a blur though, so the three blurring photos are the more accurate representations of what she looks like. We haven’t moved an acceptable dog bed into studio yet so she spends her time split between pacing, crying, jumping up on my knees, and hunting mice while knocking over our chaos. She’s rather be out in the yard, digging giant holes and eating snacks, or snoring on the couch under a blanket. I can’t fault her for that. . . . #studioassistant #studiodog #canadianceramicsstudio #albertapottersassociation #artistlife #makerlife #studiolife @albertapottersassociation . [image description: a variety of photos in a ceramics studio taken from behind the pottery wheel.
